Nebulous destiny

And the 2010 Nebula winners have been announced!

I think I never got around to posting about the nominations here, but there was, of course, a lot of overlap with the 2010 Hugo nominees, and the winners included some familiar faces. Kij Johnson’s “Spar” won for Best Short Story, and Catherynne Valente’s The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making won the Andre Norton Award for best young adult novel, which marks the first time that a self-published novel has won a major literary award.

Woo hoo!

Also, I really really want to read Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Windup Girl

  1. YAY! I loved TGWCF, and I’m so immensely pleased that it won!

But I’m also on the “why Spar?” bandwagon. I suppose I can appreciate the technical details, but I’m still icked out about it all.

  2. Maureen- I am immensely pleased that it has already become a bandwagon movement. It is extremely icky, leaning dangerously towards untasteful… I felt it relied on its shock and ‘ooh different different’ elements more than intelligent and marvelous storytelling

and i still have to finish tgwcf

  3. Well, there are two of us so far! I don’t know–I know I tend to get squicked out easily, but “Spar” was just too much for me. I haven’t gone back and re-read it but I do suspect that once the shock factor is gone there’s very little left.

Well, you may have to wait awhile–Valente just announced that they’re taking down part of it from the web, in preparation for the publication. http://yuki-onna.livejournal.com/583585.html
