“When the Gentlemen Go By” (title and concept after a Rudyard Kipling poem) is a mildly creepy tale of a mother who lives in a small English town that keeps a peculiar bargain with the nocturnally riding “Gentlemen.” It’s elegantly written but based on a well-trodden and predictable premise, and its psychological basis is shaky to boot, as discussed in the magazine’s comment section. And that’s really all I have to say about it.
