Karen Cushman

Karen Cushman (born October 4, 1941) is an American author of YA historical fiction. Her two most popular and well-known books, the medieval historical fictions Catherine, Called Birdy (1994) and The Midwife’s Apprentice (1995), respectively won the Newbery Honor and the Newbery Medal. Her books are wryly humorous and well-researched, with headstrong heroines and an emphasis on bringing historical atmosphere to life.
